The recovery project, launched in 2018, was carried out in two key phases. The first phase, completed in 2019, focused on the installation of new playing fields and essential infrastructure. The second phase, finalized in November 2023, involved a €3.4 million investment that included the renovation of the main stands, the remodeling of locker rooms, and the construction of two modern buildings, including the new headquarters for CDUP-UP.

According to António de Sousa Pereira, Rector of the University of Porto, this transformation not only restores a historic venue but also establishes a state-of-the-art facility designed to serve the entire community. Once in a state of near-abandonment, the stadium is now a vibrant, accessible, and forward-looking space.

With pristine fields, modern infrastructure, and renovated amenities, the “new” University Stadium promises to be a hub of sporting achievements and community engagement.

The construction of the CAR is planned in three phases:

 Construction will include five football fields, accommodations featuring 46 suites plus two master suites, a spa, hydrotherapy and physiotherapy areas, locker rooms, administrative and financial management offices, a 56-seat auditorium, leisure spaces, dining rooms, a kitchen, and staff rooms.

 Building of a pavilion, a support building, a 2,000-seat stand, and a store-museum.

Pereira mentioned that the center is expected to be fully operational by December 2026, an ambitious but achievable deadline. The acquisition cost for the roughly 19 hectares designated for the CAR, plus an additional 12 hectares of natural spaces, totals 3.85 million euros. The estimated costs for the first two construction phases range from 18 to 23 million euros, with the third phase coming in at about 8 million euros.

"This is a significant investment that will create substantial value," Pereira asserted. "If we can generate an additional 120 to 180 million euros over six years, this CAR could pay for itself in two or three years. The calculations are not that straightforward, but once operational at full capacity, the infrastructure’s potential for monetization is immense."

Pereira also assured that there is no shortage of foreign investors interested in financing the project, emphasizing the project’s potential for value creation and the ease of finding financial partners for well-conceived projects. This CAR represents a strategic development that could set a new standard in sports facilities for FC Porto, aligning with Villas-Boas's vision for the future of the club.

The proposed new High-Performance Center (CAR) for FC Porto, unveiled by André Villas-Boas on Tuesday night, is expected to significantly boost the club's competitive edge with an estimated cost of 30 to 35 million euros and promises financial returns, according to José Pedro Pereira, the financial administrator of Villas-Boas's team.

In Maia, on the land that sparked controversy last week, a massive billboard announced, "Here rises the FC Porto Academy," with construction equipment ready to commence work, signaling the involvement of ABB, the construction partner in this project. With this backdrop, Pinto da Costa, from the stadium's VIP stand, seized the moment to respond to comments made by rival André Villas-Boas.

“This academy is a long-held dream, a promise made four years ago. It’s a pleasure to have you here witnessing the unveiling of this wonderful utopia and this string of lies,” began the FC Porto president, following an introduction by architect Manuel Salgado. "You see it before you, it's visible, and it's captivating us all. Four years ago, at the start of my term, I promised to build an academy. I made it a condition for my candidacy that the academy would begin. Three conditions were set: reaching the Champions League Round of 16, moving out of negative equity, and starting the academy. Thus, this academy is both a long-held dream and a four-year promise," he added in response.

"Before I make further remarks, I want to highlight two individuals. First, architect Manuel Salgado, who has dedicated himself to this project not only professionally but with heart, as we are in the most beautiful stadium in Portugal, his creation, which he strongly identified with, making it even more a part of the dragon spirit. The second is Mr. Gaspar Borges. I've known him for decades. I have always had the utmost respect and best impression of him. When we needed someone to collaborate with us, he was fully committed, heart and soul, to drive this forward. His dedication was exceptional, his vision brought us to a successful outcome. Up until about three weeks ago, give or take, we always discussed things verbally, as men of their word do. Always agreed, noted things down, and moved forward," Pinto da Costa said, also mentioning Fernando Gomes, the club's administrative board member who is stepping down after a decade.

"It's been a dream for many years, a promise for four years," declared Pinto da Costa this morning as he presented the FC Porto Academy project, expected to cost around 40 million euros. André Villas-Boas will present his candidacy for the presidency of FC Porto in January, the former Porto coach revealed on Wednesday.

"I remain convinced to run for elections. The presentation of the candidacy is a mere formality and will be done in January," he announced, speaking to reporters as he left the Dragão Arena.

The (yet to be officially confirmed) candidate for the club's elections spoke after the general assembly to approve the club's report and accounts for the past season. It was a meeting of disparate opinions but without incidents, with lower attendance than expected: 819 people.

Villas-Boas believes that democracy was upheld: "It ends in the early hours of the morning, but everyone feels the good spirit of Porto, good attendance, and a free democratic expression of what every member thinks. Above all, it was democratic in the general assembly." AVB Votes Against Accounts and Seeks Improvements

The accounts for 2022/23 were approved with 52.9% of votes in favor. Specifically, there were 434 favorable votes, 187 against, and 198 abstentions, against the backdrop of a reported loss of 2.4 million euros.

Villas-Boas, who demanded that the board return the bonuses awarded in the last season, voted against the approval of the accounts and explains why.

"There is an accumulation of debt that is evident. When the accumulated liability is 499 million, it is evident and has been growing over the years. There is an operational bankruptcy here that needs to be corrected," he points out.

Nevertheless, the former Porto coach acknowledges that the board of the "president of presidents of FC Porto," Pinto da Costa, "showed signs of wanting to improve in this aspect." The example was given at the general assembly, where Fernando Gomes, financial administrator, assured that there would be no bonuses for the administration next year.

This weekend, we’ve introduced basketball to our route through sporting facilities in our Region. Your well known River Douro runs between Porto and Gaia sides. Gaia, in the south, has a basketball team with its name!


The Basket Clube de Gaia is a Portuguese basketball club founded in 2011. The club is committed to promoting basketball as a way to improve the physical and mental well-being of its athletes, as well as supporting their growth and integration as members of the community.


The Basket Clube de Gaia is also known for its commitment to providing opportunities for children and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to participate in competitive basketball. The club offers scholarships to athletes who cannot afford to pay dues, and it also provides transportation and meals to these athletes on game days.


The club's mission is to make basketball accessible to everyone, regardless of their financial situation. The club believes that sport is essential for the physical and social development of young people, and it is committed to providing opportunities for all children to participate in sports.


In addition to its commitment to social justice, the Basket Clube de Gaia is also a successful competitive basketball club. We recently visited Avintes, to the Salvador Guedes Pavilion, to see the U18 team in action. The team played an exciting game against LAC Basketball, winning by a final score of 71-26. The team (white kit) was led by a talented group of young players, who showed great skill and determination.

The game was always one-sided, with BC Gaia dominating from the first quarter. The Gaia team opened the scoring with a three-pointer and quickly distanced themselves from the visitors, ending the first period with a 10-3 lead. In the second quarter, BC Gaia continued to press LAC, increasing their advantage to 29-6 at halftime. 

In the third period, the Gaia team maintained their dominance, finishing the period with a 54-16 lead. In the final period, BC Gaia kept control of the game and won by a score of 71-26. BC Gaia delivered an excellent performance in yesterday's game, defeating LAC by a margin of 45 points. 

The Gaia players demonstrated great skill and determination, dominating the game from start to finish. The top scorers for BC Gaia were Soares (17 pts) and Pereira (10 pts).


On the other hand, LAC couldn't keep up with the pace of BC Gaia. The visitors were consistently behind on the scoreboard and couldn't find a rhythm to compete with the Gaia team. Congratulations to all involved, including the spectators, for the behavior and atmosphere we witnessed.

The battle on the pitch continued intensely, with both teams pressing in search of victory. And just when it seemed like the result was decided, Henrique Torres once again showcased his value by scoring the third goal for FC Penafiel at the 90th minute, reigniting hope among the home fans.

But Lusitânia de Lourosa's fight was not over. At the 95th minute, Manuel Sousa, through a penalty kick, scored the second goal for his team, heightening tension in the stadium in the final moments of the game. However, despite the late effort, time was running out, and the final whistle confirmed FC Penafiel's victory with a score of 3-2.

The chronology of the goals reflects the intensity of the clash, with moments of euphoria and anxiety with each play. The referee played an active role in maintaining order on the field, issuing a total of four yellow cards throughout the game, demonstrating dedication to fair play and sportsmanship.

In the end, while FC Penafiel fans celebrated the victory, Lusitânia de Lourosa supporters acknowledged the effort of their team, which fought until the last minute. We went to meet this club at the U19 roller hockey game between HC Penafiel and ACD Gulpilhares.

In a thrilling encounter, HC Penafiel emerged victorious with a final score of 5-2 against ACD Gulpilhares. The goals for HC Penafiel were skillfully netted by Bruno Rocha, José Pinto (2), Simão Freitas, and Gabriel Merino, while ACD Gulpilhares saw goals by Afonso Martins (2).

The HC Penafiel, relatively young in its establishment, is dedicated to fostering a new generation of talented players. This match served as an opportunity to witness the dedication and skill of these young athletes within the U19 category, portraying the club's commitment to nurturing local talent and promoting roller hockey in Penafiel and beyond.

Águas Santas competes in the first division of the national handball championship, standing out for its consistency and performance over the years. We went to the venue to witness this dynamic in an U18 match against ABC Braga.


At the start of the game, ABC Braga showed a more consistent initial performance, ending the first half with a 13-7 lead over Águas Santas. However, Águas Santas' determination and fighting spirit became evident in the second half of the game.

With an evolving performance, especially in the second half, Águas Santas made a notable comeback, finishing the game with a final score of 23-25 in favor of ABC Braga.


Individually, Tiago Gomes from Águas Santas was the top scorer for the team, netting 6 goals, followed by Daniel Azevedo,  4 goals for the home team. On the ABC Braga side, Domingos Almeida was the standout, leading the scoring table with 8 goals, closely followed by João Pinto with 6 goals.

Pavilhão de Águas Santas witnessed a healthy competition, reflecting the competitive and healthy spirit of national handball. The good atmosphere and enthusiastic support of the audience helped create a captivating atmosphere for the game.
