However, a word of caution: the Machinists' Union has announced a possible strike that could affect metro services during the festivities. Despite this setback, the city is prepared to offer alternative pedestrian routes and police guidance to ensure everyone can participate in the celebrations.

During the presentation of the 2025 activity plan, Ana Pinho, Chair of the Board of Directors, reflected on her nine years in office, emphasizing the institution's remarkable growth. From 2016 to 2024, Serralves welcomed 7.3 million visitors, nearly double the 3.9 million registered between 2007 and 2015, despite the challenges posed by the covid-19 pandemic.

During this period, the foundation held 185 exhibitions, surpassing the 126 organized in the preceding term. Additionally, Serralves’ collection grew in value to €130 million, establishing itself as a cornerstone of the institution with plans for further expansion. “The collection was a strategic priority for us, with impressive results, and we intend to continue attracting new collections and archives,” stated Ana Pinho, who will soon take on the role of President of the Serralves Board of Founders.

Ana Pinho also highlighted the foundation’s dynamism and its strong connection with the public, expressing gratitude to the team for their efforts. Starting December 1, Porto’s tourist accommodations will apply a new rate for the Municipal Tourist Tax, raising it from €2 to €3 per person per night. The tax is capped at seven consecutive nights and applies to guests aged 13 and older.

The Municipal Tourist Tax contributes to Porto’s sustainability as a destination, funding activities and investments that mitigate the pressure on public spaces, transport, and city services. Certain exemptions apply, including stays for medical reasons, eviction or displacement, disabled individuals, pilgrims in hostels, temporary housing by public social organizations, and refugees or displaced persons due to conflicts.

Tourism sector businesses can address questions about the new tax rate via the Municipal Tourist Tax platform, ensuring a smooth implementation of this updated measure.

Overnight stays in the city now incur a €3 tax per person. The measure aims to support urban infrastructure and promote sustainability.

Avenida dos Aliados will be the focal point for the celebrations, hosting major concerts, including Marisa Liz on December 8 and Rodrigo Leão on December 23, the latter marking 30 years of his career alongside young local musicians.

In addition to music, the Christmas Market will bring festive cheer to Jardim de João Chagas and Largo do Amor de Perdição. Open daily until December 23, the market will feature two themed tents: the Christmas Tent, offering music, theater, dance, and contemporary circus performances, and the Crystal Tent, hosting workshops for children. Visitors can also enjoy a traditional ice skating rink and a Parisian carousel, both free of charge with tickets available on-site.

This project, led by the city, included a series of meticulous steps to restore the monument's original splendor: the stonework was cleaned and treated, all metallic inscriptions (316 characters) were fully replaced, and the map illustrating Portugal’s maritime discovery routes was re-engraved and repainted.

Created by the sculptor Lagoa Henriques, "À Grei" was erected in 1960 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Prince Henry the Navigator. The installation was enhanced by a carefully planned urban design by architects Luís Cunha and Vasco Mendes, highlighting the monument’s significance and the historical importance of the site.

The bronze sculptural ensemble consists of three male figures representing the shipyard workers and citizens of Porto who contributed to building, provisioning, and manning the first fleet sent by Prince Henry in 1415. This tribute honors those who, through their labor and courage, supported the initial Portuguese maritime expeditions, which were crucial to the Age of Discoveries.

In addition to the bronze figures, the monument features a stone mural. One side of the mural illustrates the maritime routes explored by Portuguese navigators, while the other side displays a transcription of the "General Chapters of the City of Porto in the Courts of 1436," acknowledging Porto’s vital role in supporting maritime ventures of that period.

The festival, which ran all day on both Saturday and Sunday, transformed the park into a lively hub for families, tourists, and locals eager to embrace the beauty of the season.

Upon arrival through the gates on Avenida Marechal Gomes da Costa, it was clear that the event had drawn a large and diverse crowd. The steady flow of people entering and leaving the park created a dynamic atmosphere, as new visitors arrived eager to explore the various activities offered. Free admission made the event accessible to all, attracting children, families, and culture lovers alike.

One of the highlights of the afternoon was the live performance by the dynamic trio COLLIGNON, composed of Yves Lennertz, Gino Bombrini, and Jori Collignon. Known for their explosive live shows, COLLIGNON thrilled the audience with a high-energy set, promoting their latest album,

During our visit today, we experienced firsthand one of the many highlights the fair has to offer: a talk with esteemed guests, coinciding with the launch of the book “A urgência da cidade: o Porto e 100 anos de Fernando Távora.” This underscored the significant impact of architect Fernando Távora on Porto's urban development, showcasing the level of insightful discussions and cultural content that visitors can expect throughout the fair.


The Porto Book Fair operates with flexible hours to ensure everyone can make the most of their visit: from Monday to Friday, it opens at 12:00, and on weekends, it starts at 11:00. The fair remains open until 21:00 from Sunday to Thursday, extending to 22:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.

The Catacomb Cemetery began construction in 1746, following a fire that destroyed a poor brother’s hostel. The Venerable Third Order of São Francisco decided to create a cemetery and, above it, a house for Dispatch and Secretariat. Initially, the first 12 tombs were designated for the administrative body of the Order.

The first phase of the cemetery featured ground-level tombs with walls above and small urn vaults, as well as an altar for funeral rites. In 1795, with the construction of the current Church of the Third Order of São Francisco, the Order began building a new cemetery beneath the church’s pavement. The third phase, in 1802, expanded the space with a new extension beneath the pavement of the Chapel of Santo António, linking the new and old cemeteries.

The last burial in the Catacomb Cemetery took place in 1866, after which the Order began using the Agramonte Cemetery. The exact number of bodies interred in the Catacomb Cemetery has never been counted, but today the site attracts around 1,500 visitors daily, making it a popular part of the museum's tour.

The museum director notes that while Brazilians initially find the space uncomfortable, they are often pleasantly surprised to discover familiar names. In contrast, French, Spanish, and Mexican visitors, due to their cultural and religious perspectives on death, tend to exhibit a more natural curiosity about the cemetery. 

In addition to the tombs, the museum displays interesting items such as old alms boxes and processional litters. Analdina Rocha assures that the experience of the Catacomb Cemetery is both enriching and satisfying, leaving visitors intrigued by the rich history of this remarkable location.

The Museum of the Order of São Francisco, which includes the church of the former convent, the Church of the Third Order of São Francisco, and the House of Dispatch, harbors a true hidden gem beneath the ground: the Catacomb Cemetery. This subterranean space, which has recently piqued the interest of visitors, is managed by Analdina Rocha, the museum's technical director who has dedicated 25 years to this unique site.

The air was thick with the aroma of grilled sardines, a staple of the festival, as revelers strolled through the streets, their heads adorned with colorful plastic hammers. These iconic "martelinhos" are a playful symbol of the festival, used to gently tap friends and strangers on the head in a gesture of good luck and renewal.

As the sun set, the Douro River shimmered under the glow of a full moon, setting the stage for a spectacular fireworks display. While the location of the fireworks was slightly altered this year due to river conditions, the dazzling show still captivated the crowds gathered along the Ribeira.

The night sky was further illuminated by a cascade of glowing balloons, released into the air by people of all ages. This enchanting spectacle added a touch of magic to the already festive atmosphere.

Porto has climbed four places and is now the second most attractive European city for hosting events among cities that are not capitals of their respective countries. It should also be noted that Porto is the leading destination among cities that belong to the collaborative network European Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Braga, Guimarães, and Matosinhos have already shown their competitiveness in this segment, moving from "modest positions" to "positions of some prominence," with Braga notably climbing 117 places.

The regional tourism officials are pleased with the significant rise in the ICCA ranking and are determined "to maintain their commitment to seeking business opportunities in this segment, as well as participating in, attracting, and supporting MICE events [Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions]," according to Luís Pedro Martins, president of Turismo do Porto e Norte de Portugal.

The Northern Region has the infrastructure, services, and organizational capacity to meet the needs of each event's profile and is working to strengthen the destination's presence in major international networks, digitalize the offerings, and intensify networking actions.

"We have no doubt that this is a great lever for tourism, due to its multiplier effect on other tourism segments, but also because it helps to boost other economic sectors," said the official.

Luís Pedro Martins emphasizes that significant work has been done to "equip municipalities and companies with the opportunities that this product represents, believing that the region will grow significantly in this segment."

The city of Porto has been ranked as the second most attractive non-capital city for Event Tourism, according to the ICCA – International Congress and Convention Association ranking.

In a statement, the festival organization, which will visit venues in Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia, and Vila Nova de Famalicão, explains that the programming of the 9th series of Pianofest kicks off this month with presentation concerts, this time with stops at European stages in Paris and Madrid, before the usual galas in New York and Washington.

The first concert took place on the 23rd at Teatro Real in Madrid, followed by another on the same day, featuring Nuno Marques and vice-director Mariel Mayz, both pianists based in the United States, with special participation by Luis Fernando Pérez.

The festival was presented this Friday, the 26th, in Paris, specifically at the Portuguese Embassy in France, as part of the April 25 celebrations, where the pianists were accompanied by singer Lara Martins in a performance inspired by the April songs, adapted for piano.

The festival then heads to the United States, where it will perform in New York on May 16 and in Washington on May 17, with a concert at the residence of the Portuguese ambassador to the U.S., featuring Nuno Marques, Mariel Mayz, and Lara Martins for both shows.

The initiative, which recognizes the best Erasmus destination of the year, was launched by the Erasmus Student Network (ESN) in partnership with the European Commission, aiming to identify best practices in supporting student mobility and highlighting the role that local student associations play in making cities better mobility destinations.

"We feel that our effort has been recognized. As student volunteers, we will continue our hard work to make Porto an even more welcoming city. We want all international students to feel at home, to continue choosing our Porto, and to take back to their countries all the good memories that the Invicta provides them," emphasizes Vitor Bizarro, president of ESN Porto.

ESN Porto was responsible for the candidacy and Porto's success in the initiative. As a local section, it supports over 3,000 international students, with the most represented nationalities being Italy, Spain, and Brazil. In addition to helping students achieve a better cultural, educational, and social experience, it also carries out various activities to support local communities.

During this 4-day meeting, the EGM brought together over a thousand ESN volunteers from various countries to discuss the future of mobility, focusing on topics related to digitization, sustainability, inclusion, democratic participation, among others. Through these various moments of sharing, debates, and workshops, mobility programs, higher education institutions, and opportunities in Europe were also promoted.

When approached by Expresso, neither the Ministry of Culture, the MMP (Portuguese Museum of Photography), nor the new owner of the painting wished to comment.

The most likely scenario is that the Lello Bookstore Foundation, represented by Pedro Pinto—a lawyer, real estate investor in Porto, and head of the Lionesa Business Center in Leça do Balio—was the "private entity" that agreed to purchase Domingos Sequeira's masterpiece. The 19th-century work left Portugal at the end of last year amid significant controversy, following what the Minister of Culture termed a "regrettable failure of the services" of the then Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage (DGPC), a story first reported by Expresso.

The announcement is set to take place at a ceremony in the National Palace of Ajuda this Wednesday at noon. A "Memorandum of Understanding between the Portuguese state and the owner of the 'Descent from the Cross' painting" will be signed, aiming for its public exhibition in a national museum. Serralves Park will host the next edition of the North Festival from May 24th to 26th, featuring acts such as Keane, Tom Odell, and Myke Towers.

Puerto Rican singer Myke Towers is confirmed for the first night of the festival on May 24th. The English band Keane returns to Portugal and is the headline act on May 25th, celebrating the 20th anniversary of their first album. During the second night of the festival, British artist Tom Odell, known for hits like "Another Love" and "Heal", will also take the stage. He is preparing to release his sixth album, "Black Friday", on January 26th.

The festival welcomed over 50,000 people in the last edition over the course of three days. The choice of the new venue was based on the quality of the infrastructure, spaciousness, and excellent location, while also seeking to renew the event's dynamics and enhance the festival-goers' experience, considering its significant growth. Previously, the festival took place at the Alfândega do Porto.

"It's time!" The last verse of 'Mensagem' by Fernando Pessoa serves as the motto to celebrate the 118th anniversary of Livraria Lello. For this reason, this Saturday, January 13th, admission is free and the first 118 customers will receive free books.

"To mark this very special occasion, we chose the last verse of 'Mensagem' by Fernando Pessoa, which will serve as inspiration for us to look at the alarming numbers regarding reading and access to culture in Portugal and, definitively, together with other institutions and individuals, take action to try to change them," the organizers announced on social media.

During the private celebrations, which are taking place on Saturday morning, they will also announce the program for 2024 and the creation of the Livraria Lello Foundation with new offices in a historic building. An exhibition dedicated to Fernando Pessoa will also be inaugurated, "featuring book editions and pamphlets published during the author's lifetime, posthumously published books, and books from Fernando Pessoa's personal library."

The event will feature the participation of fado singer Carminho, who will perform two songs related to the life and work of Fernando Pessoa. Only at the end, around 1 pm, will the doors open to customers. From then on, the first 118 will receive free books.

The bookstore was inaugurated on January 13, 1906, on Rua das Carmelitas. Currently, Lello is considered "one of the most beautiful in the world" and a Public Interest Monument.

Its architecture, collections of books from all corners of the world, and the fact that it inspired one of the most recognized sagas in literature and cinema, 'Harry Potter,' have made it especially famous in recent years.

New Year's Eve concerts in Porto will be divided between Avenida dos Aliados and the Gardens of the Crystal Palace, with the usual fireworks display scheduled for midnight at Praça da República. In a statement released on Wednesday, Porto City Council announced that the city "will provide an unforgettable New Year's Eve, full of music, color, joy, and a fireworks spectacle."

The headline acts this year are Richie Campbell, Carolina Deslandes, and Jimmy P, and the program will be divided into two stages: one at Avenida dos Aliados and another at Praça do Rossio in the Gardens of the Crystal Palace.

The stage set up at Aliados will kick off at 10:30 pm with the "We Trust" project, the musical alter ego of director André Tentúgal, and at 12:10 am, Richie Campbell "promises to infect the city center with his sounds and energy." The night at Aliados will conclude with a performance by artist Zinko, who will deliver a live act.

Meanwhile, at the stage set up in the Gardens of the Crystal Palace, the night will begin at 10:30 pm with a performance by Carolina Deslandes, followed by Jimmy P taking the stage shortly after midnight, presenting a set of songs "that promises to enhance the festivities on this special night."

At both stages, the OCUBO collective will present a multimedia show titled "Beloved Porto," which will serve as the countdown to the new year starting at 11:50 pm.

At midnight, the city skies "will fill with brilliance and light, with a monumental fireworks display" launched from Praça da República, where comedian Francisco Menezes will be the special guest for the countdown. Entry is free for all spaces.

On the first day of the year, the city will continue its tradition with the Portuguese Symphonic Band presenting the New Year's Concert starting at 4:00 pm at Avenida dos Aliados.

The lights will be on from December 1st to January 7th. During this period, the lighting will operate from Sunday to Thursday between 6 pm and 11 pm. On Fridays, Saturdays, and holiday eves, it will be extended until midnight.
