The Catacomb Cemetery began construction in 1746, following a fire that destroyed a poor brother’s hostel. The Venerable Third Order of São Francisco decided to create a cemetery and, above it, a house for Dispatch and Secretariat. Initially, the first 12 tombs were designated for the administrative body of the Order.

The first phase of the cemetery featured ground-level tombs with walls above and small urn vaults, as well as an altar for funeral rites. In 1795, with the construction of the current Church of the Third Order of São Francisco, the Order began building a new cemetery beneath the church’s pavement. The third phase, in 1802, expanded the space with a new extension beneath the pavement of the Chapel of Santo António, linking the new and old cemeteries.

The last burial in the Catacomb Cemetery took place in 1866, after which the Order began using the Agramonte Cemetery. The exact number of bodies interred in the Catacomb Cemetery has never been counted, but today the site attracts around 1,500 visitors daily, making it a popular part of the museum's tour.

The museum director notes that while Brazilians initially find the space uncomfortable, they are often pleasantly surprised to discover familiar names. In contrast, French, Spanish, and Mexican visitors, due to their cultural and religious perspectives on death, tend to exhibit a more natural curiosity about the cemetery.

The city of Porto came alive on the night of June 23rd, as locals and tourists alike took to the streets to celebrate the annual São João Festival. This vibrant and deeply rooted tradition, honoring Saint John the Baptist, filled the city with music, dancing, and a unique blend of ancient and modern customs.

The air was thick with the aroma of grilled sardines, a staple of the festival, as revelers strolled through the streets, their heads adorned with colorful plastic hammers. These iconic "martelinhos" are a playful symbol of the festival, used to gently tap friends and strangers on the head in a gesture of good luck and renewal.

As the sun set, the Douro River shimmered under the glow of a full moon, setting the stage for a spectacular fireworks display. While the location of the fireworks was slightly altered this year due to river conditions, the dazzling show still captivated the crowds gathered along the Ribeira.

The night sky was further illuminated by a cascade of glowing balloons, released into the air by people of all ages. This enchanting spectacle added a touch of magic to the already festive atmosphere.

Throughout the city, the rhythmic beat of traditional music filled the air, as impromptu street parties erupted in every corner. From the historic Ribeira district to the trendy bars and clubs, the city pulsed with energy and excitement.

Porto has climbed four places and is now the second most attractive European city for hosting events among cities that are not capitals of their respective countries. It should also be noted that Porto is the leading destination among cities that belong to the collaborative network European Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Braga, Guimarães, and Matosinhos have already shown their competitiveness in this segment, moving from "modest positions" to "positions of some prominence," with Braga notably climbing 117 places.

The regional tourism officials are pleased with the significant rise in the ICCA ranking and are determined "to maintain their commitment to seeking business opportunities in this segment, as well as participating in, attracting, and supporting MICE events [Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions]," according to Luís Pedro Martins, president of Turismo do Porto e Norte de Portugal.

The Northern Region has the infrastructure, services, and organizational capacity to meet the needs of each event's profile and is working to strengthen the destination's presence in major international networks, digitalize the offerings, and intensify networking actions.

"We have no doubt that this is a great lever for tourism, due to its multiplier effect on other tourism segments, but also because it helps to boost other economic sectors," said the official.

Luís Pedro Martins emphasizes that significant work has been done to "equip municipalities and companies with the opportunities that this product represents, believing that the region will grow significantly in this segment."

In a statement, the festival organization, which will visit venues in Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia, and Vila Nova de Famalicão, explains that the programming of the 9th series of Pianofest kicks off this month with presentation concerts, this time with stops at European stages in Paris and Madrid, before the usual galas in New York and Washington.

The first concert took place on the 23rd at Teatro Real in Madrid, followed by another on the same day, featuring Nuno Marques and vice-director Mariel Mayz, both pianists based in the United States, with special participation by Luis Fernando Pérez.

The festival was presented this Friday, the 26th, in Paris, specifically at the Portuguese Embassy in France, as part of the April 25 celebrations, where the pianists were accompanied by singer Lara Martins in a performance inspired by the April songs, adapted for piano.

The festival then heads to the United States, where it will perform in New York on May 16 and in Washington on May 17, with a concert at the residence of the Portuguese ambassador to the U.S., featuring Nuno Marques, Mariel Mayz, and Lara Martins for both shows.

The initiative, which recognizes the best Erasmus destination of the year, was launched by the Erasmus Student Network (ESN) in partnership with the European Commission, aiming to identify best practices in supporting student mobility and highlighting the role that local student associations play in making cities better mobility destinations.

"We feel that our effort has been recognized. As student volunteers, we will continue our hard work to make Porto an even more welcoming city. We want all international students to feel at home, to continue choosing our Porto, and to take back to their countries all the good memories that the Invicta provides them," emphasizes Vitor Bizarro, president of ESN Porto.

ESN Porto was responsible for the candidacy and Porto's success in the initiative. As a local section, it supports over 3,000 international students, with the most represented nationalities being Italy, Spain, and Brazil. In addition to helping students achieve a better cultural, educational, and social experience, it also carries out various activities to support local communities.

During this 4-day meeting, the EGM brought together over a thousand ESN volunteers from various countries to discuss the future of mobility, focusing on topics related to digitization, sustainability, inclusion, democratic participation, among others. Through these various moments of sharing, debates, and workshops, mobility programs, higher education institutions, and opportunities in Europe were also promoted.

The Invicta has just been awarded the title of best Erasmus destination at the largest European student conference, the Erasmus Generation Meeting (EGM), held from April 4th to 7th in Seville.

A patronage action by a Northern entrepreneur has brought back to Portugal a masterpiece that had previously left the country due to a "regrettable lapse in service," according to various sources connected to Portuguese museums and art galleries interviewed by Expresso. The announcement is expected to be made on Wednesday. When approached by Expresso, neither the Ministry of Culture, the MMP (Portuguese Museum of Photography), nor the new owner of the painting wished to comment.

The most likely scenario is that the Lello Bookstore Foundation, represented by Pedro Pinto—a lawyer, real estate investor in Porto, and head of the Lionesa Business Center in Leça do Balio—was the "private entity" that agreed to purchase Domingos Sequeira's masterpiece. The 19th-century work left Portugal at the end of last year amid significant controversy, following what the Minister of Culture termed a "regrettable failure of the services" of the then Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage (DGPC), a story first reported by Expresso.

The announcement is set to take place at a ceremony in the National Palace of Ajuda this Wednesday at noon. A "Memorandum of Understanding between the Portuguese state and the owner of the 'Descent from the Cross' painting" will be signed, aiming for its public exhibition in a national museum. Invitations were sent out on Monday to various authorities connected to cultural heritage and directors of Portuguese museums.

Serralves Park will host the next edition of the North Festival from May 24th to 26th, featuring acts such as Keane, Tom Odell, and Myke Towers.

Puerto Rican singer Myke Towers is confirmed for the first night of the festival on May 24th. The English band Keane returns to Portugal and is the headline act on May 25th, celebrating the 20th anniversary of their first album. During the second night of the festival, British artist Tom Odell, known for hits like "Another Love" and "Heal", will also take the stage. He is preparing to release his sixth album, "Black Friday", on January 26th.

The festival welcomed over 50,000 people in the last edition over the course of three days. The choice of the new venue was based on the quality of the infrastructure, spaciousness, and excellent location, while also seeking to renew the event's dynamics and enhance the festival-goers' experience, considering its significant growth. Previously, the festival took place at the Alfândega do Porto.
