On July 19, the festival celebrates both Portuguese and international music. Thirty Seconds to Mars headline the day, alongside national favorites Miguel Araújo and Os Quatro e Meia. The lineup is enriched by Luís Trigacheiro and Buba Espinho, leading voices of the new generation of fado and traditional music, and the "Dois Pares de Botas" project, which brings together Nena and Joana Almeirante in a fusion of pop and country.

MEO Marés Vivas 2025: Festival Unveils Full Lineup

The 4th edition of the International Festival of Organ and Sacred Music (FIOMS) is taking place from October 19 to December 1, offering 38 free concerts in 33 churches across 11 municipalities in the Greater Porto and Northern Portugal regions. With the participation of over 400 musicians from 10 countries, the festival celebrates the rich tradition of sacred music and the majesty of the organ, featuring performances by renowned international artists and choirs.

The festival officially kicked off on Saturday, October 19, at 9:30 p.m. in Porto's Cathedral, with a special concert marking the 39th anniversary of the Grand Pipe Organ. Dutch organist Leo van Doeselaar inaugurated the event, performing works by masters such as Bach, Pepping, and Distler. The concert drew a large crowd, and programs quickly ran out due to high attendance. In an informal conversation afterward, van Doeselaar described the organ as “special.” It was a strong opening, but there is much more to come.

Over the next six weeks, FIOMS will extend its reach to different cities in the region, with Porto serving as the main hub, hosting 15 concerts in iconic churches like the Cathedral, Igreja da Lapa, and Igreja de São João Novo. Additionally, the festival will take place in municipalities such as Maia, Vila Nova de Gaia, Gondomar, Valongo, Espinho, Arouca, Felgueiras, Vila do Conde, Amarante, and Oliveira de Azeméis. These locations will feature unique concerts where the powerful sound of historic organs blends seamlessly with the unique acoustics of the churches.

Among the invited artists are internationally acclaimed organists such as Cameron Carpenter (USA), Winfried Lichtscheidel (Germany), and Sophie Magnanini (Australia/Italy). A major highlight will be Verdi's

On Saturday night, Gaia World Music delivered a memorable moment with the performance of Haitian artist Moonlight Benjamin at the iconic Serra do Pilar. Her unique blend of Caribbean rhythms with energetic rock captivated the audience, creating an intense and immersive atmosphere. The combination of her powerful voice with the fusion of traditional Haitian sounds and distorted guitars made the night a true celebration of global music.

The Serra do Pilar, with its stunning view over Porto and the Douro River, added to the magic of the experience. The cool evening breeze contrasted with the vibrant energy emanating from the stage, while the distant city lights harmonized with the music. In this intimate setting, Moonlight Benjamin’s sound commanded attention, enchanting everyone present.

Saturday night was just one part of the rich cultural tapestry that Gaia World Music offered over three days. With performances featuring sounds from the Maghreb, Chile, and Guinea-Bissau, the festival stood out for its ability to unite diverse musical traditions in a single event. Artists such as Tabanka Djaz and Al Caravan brought their unique sounds, contributing to the festival’s diversity.

The church’s organ, renowned not only in the city but also in national and international scenes, was celebrating its birthday. A grand event like this must “pull out all the stops” and Lee definitely did just that!

The artist, based in France, has an intimate understanding of the voice of French repertoire from the 19th and 20th centuries, almost as if it has become her own voice and language. She adds a sense of naturalness and ease to this very difficult and complex music that is seldom heard from other artists.

The organ, German builder Georg Jann’s masterpiece, has no shortage of colour possibilities and is one of the most versatile instruments in Europe. Despite a mind-boggling amount of options on four manuals and pedals, Lee displayed a complete understanding of the palette of colours at her disposal and mixed them masterfully together into a French Romantic artwork.

The evening took us on a rollercoaster of emotional highs and lows, from the softest and most tender moments with quiet flute and string stops, to the roar of the instrument’s plenum at the music’s climaxes. The programme ended with the universally recognised “Toccata” from the Fifth Symphony by Charles-Marie Widor. As the sheer power of the instrument resounded through the building on the last chord, we were all reminded how fortunate we in Porto are to have this instrument and for the great work of the Irmandade da Lapa and organist and organiser, Filipe Veríssimo, for always offering the public world-class performances.

Internationally recognised concert organist, Shin-Young Lee, found herself in Porto on July 7th to perform a recital for the full house of guests hungry for music at Igreja da Lapa.

This past weekend, the Marés Vivas festival once again thrilled attendees with a wide range of activities and attractions. We covered the festival's final day, and the diversity of options available to festival-goers was particularly noticeable. Among various shops, challenges, and brands, the FC Porto booth made its debut and drew a significant crowd of fans.

The festival grounds featured an extensive food court, two smaller stages - one dedicated to comedy - and a lively samba wheel. 

The attention was split, of course, between the secondary stage and the main stage (primarly), where our team covered the performances on the third day.

António Zambujo, a leading figure in modern Portuguese music, opened the day on the main stage with a calm and intimate performance. Known for his evocative songwriting, Zambujo's music blends traditional fado with contemporary influences, creating a unique and intimate sound that resonates with the fans.

Born in Beja in 1975, Zambujo has carved a significant place for himself in the Portuguese music scene. His career took off with the release of his debut album "O Mesmo Fado" in 2002, and he has since released several acclaimed albums, earning numerous awards and accolades along the way. His ability to infuse fado with elements of jazz, bossa nova, and other genres has garnered him a dedicated following in Portugal.

During his set at Marés Vivas, Zambujo’s performance was marked by a serene and introspective atmosphere, correclty connected to the simplicity of his presentation, focused on specific instruments that the reader can spot below.

The legendary band from Porto, Ornatos Violeta, a defining force of their musical era, was once again in the spotlight, commemorating the 25th anniversary of their iconic album "O monstro precisa de amigos".

Formed in 1991, Ornatos Violeta quickly became a benchmark in the Portuguese music scene, with a unique sound blending funk, jazz, and ska. After a hiatus that began in 2002, the band made a comeback in 2012, selling out seven shows in Lisbon, Porto, and Micaelense, and continued to make special appearances at major festivals.

Their presence reflects the festival’s long philosophy of supporting talent and Portuguese music. Ornatos Violeta’s set was not just a milestone in the band’s history but also a testament to their enduring legacy. Their music continues to inspire and move audiences, both long-standing fans and new generations discovering their unparalleled sound. 

Some of the feedback after show was placing this set as the best of the day. One may disagree, but, for locals, it is not far from the truth. 

Louis Tomlinson was immediately greeted by a packed crowd of young teenagers who had eagerly awaited his performance. The atmosphere was electric as fans, many of whom dreamt of meeting the former One Direction star, screamed along to every song.

The Brithish singer, known for his charismatic stage presence and heartfelt lyrics, provided an exhilarating moment for his devoted fans. From the moment he stepped on stage, the energy was palpable, with the crowd enthusiastically singing along to a mix of his solo hits and One Direction classics. However, for the discerning listener, Tomlinson's pitch occasionally fell short of expectations.

Tomlinson shot to fame as a member of One Direction, one of the most successful boy bands in history. Since embarking on his solo career, he has continued to captivate audiences with his distinct voice and relatable songwriting. His debut solo album, "Walls," released in 2020, showcased his growth as an artist and solidified his place in the music industry.

At Marés Vivas, Tomlinson’s performance was a highlight, reflecting the festival's appeal to diverse audiences. His connection with the crowd was evident as he interacted with fans, expressing gratitude for their unwavering support. The sea of waving hands and glowing phone screens created a intense backdrop, turning the concert into an unforgettable experience for hard fans.

Snow Patrol took the stage late on Sunday, keeping the dedicated audience members who had stayed until the very end. Despite the late hour, the band's performance was a fitting finale to the festival, rewarding the patience and enthusiasm of the crowd with their signature anthemic rock sound.

The Northern Irish-Scottish band, known for hits like "Heal Me" and "Run," delivered a set that was both powerful and emotional. Gary Lightbody’s heartfelt vocals, combined with the band's rich instrumental arrangements, created a captivating atmosphere. Each song resonated deeply with the audience, who sang along passionately, making for a memorable closing act.

Their performance not only highlighted their enduring appeal but also left a lasting impression on all who witnessed it, bringing the festival to a triumphant close which, after the well awaited "Chasing Cars", had space for two last encore songs - "What If This Is All the Love You Ever Get" and "Just Say Yes".

Over the course of three days, the Marés Vivas festival hosted more than 30 national and international artists across its five stages. The 2024 lineup included big names such as Take That, D'ZRT, James Arthur, Ben Harper, António Zambujo, Marisa Liz, Ornatos Violeta, DAMA, Syro, Rag'N'Bone Man, Louis Tomlinson, and Snow Patrol.

The director of PEV Entertainment revealed that the second and third days reached the maximum capacity of 40,000 people at the former Madalena Campsite. The 2025 edition is scheduled to July 18, 19 & 20.

The festival thrilled attendees with diverse activities, including the debut of the FC Porto booth, a varied food court, and lively performances. With over 30 artists like Take That and Snow Patrol, the event reached its 40,000-person capacity on the second and third days.

On May 26th, the North Festival 2024 concluded its journey at the Parque de Serralves in Porto with a night that celebrated musical diversity and contagious energy. The rain did not appear, so the conditions for a spectacular closing were perfect.

The afternoon went on with great happiness for some, who were also connected to the national sporting event, which culminated in a new trophy for Porto's football team! It was then time to pass by the food stalls area to eat and celebrate, getting ready for the final stretch of concerts at the festival.

Bell Marques took the stage, bringing the warmth and joy of Bahian axé to the North Festival. Known for his work leading the band Chiclete com Banana, Bell Marques is a living legend of the Salvador Carnival and an iconic figure in Brazilian music.

With hits like "Diga Que Valeu" and "Voa Voa," his songs are synonymous with partying and celebration. On stage, Bell Marques is an explosion of energy and charisma, infecting the audience with his enthusiasm and vibrant presence. His performance ensured an exciting start to the night, with everyone dancing and singing along to his unforgettable hits. There was no shortage of dancing and concrete interactions with the audience.

Brazilian singer Claudia Leitte, who had performed in Lisbon the night before, brought even more energy to the festival with her electrifying performance. Also hailing from Bahia, Claudia Leitte is one of the leading voices in axé and Brazilian pop, known for her ability to combine traditional rhythms with a modern twist.

Songs like "Largadinho" and "Bola de Sabão" are just some of the hits that have marked her career. On stage, Claudia is a dynamic force, with vibrant choreographies and constant interaction with the audience. Her magnetic presence and ability to turn any show into a true carnival ensured moments of euphoria.

Closing the festival, the highly anticipated return of Nelly Furtado brought a mix of pop, folk, and Latin influences to the North Festival stage. The Canadian singer of Portuguese descent is a versatile artist who has conquered the world with her voice and established songs. This was her first concert in Portugal since a distant one in 2011.

This concert featured the presence of Portuguese singer Ana Moura. On stage, the two singers reminisced "Força," a single from the album "Folklore," released in 2004, and the anthem of the 2004 European Football Championship held in Portugal.

With global hits like "I'm Like a Bird," "Say It Right," and "Promiscuous," her career is marked by a series of successes that span different styles and cultures. On stage, Nelly Furtado displays a captivating presence and a vocal talent that was once impressive, though it was noticeable that she was not in full form. Nevertheless, her performance was a celebration of her multifaceted career, leaving the audience asking for more.

The third and final day of the North Festival 2024 at Parque de Serralves was a spectacular celebration of music and cultural diversity. The festival has established itself as a highlight event in Porto's cultural agenda, raising high expectations for future editions, with hopes for new lineups featuring big names. The new location is a very positive point, and the organization is to be congratulated for this choice.

According to the organizers, 65,000 festival-goers attended, with 86.3% being first-timers, and the economic impact was 22 million euros. A next edition is confirmed.

North Festival '24 - Third day

On May 25th, under the rain, Serralves Park came alive once again with the second night of the North Festival 2024. With an eclectic lineup, the festival continued to enchant spectators, likely drawing its largest crowd yet and providing a pleasant atmosphere that solidified it as the perfect location, despite the frequent periods spent sheltered under the trees. Let's get to know some of the artists who lit up the night.

The Reytons took the main stage, delivering a potent dose of indie rock. Also hailing from the UK, The Reytons quickly won over the crowd with their raw and authentic sound.

With hits like "Low Life" and "Kids Off The Estate," the band is known for their energetic performances and their ability to turn each show into a true rock 'n' roll party. On stage, The Reytons sought to intensely interact with the audience, delivering a classic performance.

In a hidden sunset, Birdy captivated the audience with her angelic voice and soft melodies. The British singer and songwriter is famous for her melancholic and introspective indie pop style, winning hearts with her self-titled debut in 2011.

Daughter of a concert pianist, Birdy learned to play the piano at seven and began writing her own lyrics at eight. She became known for winning the Open Mic UK music competition in 2008 at just 12 years old.

On stage, Birdy presents an introspective and emotional performance, creating an intimate atmosphere despite the large scale of the event. Her serene presence and delicate voice provided a moment of beauty and contemplation at the festival. "Skinny Love" and "Wings" are two of her biggest hits, concluding her performance.

Later in the evening, Tom Odell brought his passion and talent to the piano on the North Festival stage. The British singer and songwriter is known for his emotional ballads and impressive piano skills, creating music that deeply touches the audience.

In 2012, Tom Odell released the EP ‘Songs From Another Love’ and received the BRIT Critic’s Choice Award that same year. After a European tour in 2014 and winning the Ivor Novello Award for Songwriter of the Year, Odell moved to Los Angeles.

In April 2018, Tom Odell released a self-titled single from his third studio album, "Jubilee Road," which arrived in October. In 2021, he released the single "Numb" from the album "Monsters," featuring a darker sound influenced by XXXTentacion, Drake, and Travis Scott, and the following year, he returned to piano and voice with the single "Best Day of My Life."

With hits like "Another Love" and the recent "Black Friday," Odell has a unique ability to combine sincere lyrics with catchy melodies. On stage, he is a charismatic and engaging presence, with well-executed lighting capturing the audience's attention with his powerful voice and storytelling through his songs.

Closing the second night of the festival, Keane brought their signature sound to a full house of 30,000 people. The British band, famous since the 2000s, has built a vast fan base with their piano-driven sound. They never aimed to be considered "cool"; their goal has always been to create enduring music that stands the test of time. Their motivation is to reach all listeners, not just those who follow trends or are young.

With five studio albums to their name, 2024 marks 20 years since the release of their debut album, "Hopes and Fears." After completing an impressive world tour honoring their early work, they kicked off the festival season on this day.

"Somewhere Only We Know" and "Everybody's Changing" are just some of the huge hits that define the band's career. On stage, Keane delivers a performance full of energy and emotion, with vocalist Tom Chaplin showcasing an unmatched ability to connect with the audience. The band bid farewell to the North Festival with "Bedshaped," ending the night with a show that was both nostalgic and electrifying, leaving fans grateful for the return of this band that speaks so well about Porto.

On May 25th, the North Festival 2024 in Serralves Park, Porto, thrived despite the rain, featuring memorable performances by The Reytons, Birdy, Tom Odell, and Keane. The Reytons energized the crowd with their indie rock, Birdy captivated with her angelic voice, Tom Odell touched hearts with his emotional ballads, and Keane closed the night with their timeless hits.

North Festival '24 - Second day

On May 24, Parque de Serralves in Porto premiered as the new venue for the North Festival 2024, offering a stunning backdrop and a welcoming atmosphere perfect for wrapping up the workweek. With an air of anticipation, many wondered what the experience would be like at this new location for the main stage. It didn't take long for the first concert of the evening to dispel any doubts, kicking off a series of diverse and unique performances.

Nininho Vaz Maia took to the stage, inaugurating the festival with a unique blend of pop, flamenco, and Gypsy influences. Born and raised in Portugal, Vaz Maia is known for revitalizing fado, a traditionally melancholic musical genre, with a modern and accessible approach. His biggest hit, "Gosto de Ti," featuring Cristiano Maia, quickly won over the Portuguese public and crossed borders, touching hearts in various Lusophone countries. It has garnered 26 million views on YouTube. On stage, Nininho exudes a charismatic presence, blending emotion and passion into every note. His confident demeanor and ability to connect with the audience ensure a heartfelt and authentic start to the festival.

Next up was 22-year-old Spanish artist Iñigo Quintero. Hailing from Spain, Quintero emerged on the music scene with a smooth voice and introspective lyrics, captivating a legion of fans worldwide. In 2023, he reached number one on the Spotify Global charts! His songs often explore themes of love and self-discovery, with melodies that resonate deeply. The single "Si No Estás" is undoubtedly his biggest hit. The lyrics discuss the experience of losing faith and express the protagonist's struggle with this realization. On stage, Iñigo Quintero began his performance somewhat nervously and used his speeches to the audience to admit it. "A few months ago, only my family knew me!" Surprised by the number of people, he acknowledged the challenge but leaned on his audience, who comforted and helped him overcome this step. Undoubtedly, it was an emotional performance for a poignant start to this festival. Good luck, Iñigo!

Not changing the language but geographically much further away, we moved to Argentina! Maria Becerra took the stage, bringing an explosion of energy and urban rhythms to the North Festival. Becerra boasts 24.2 million monthly listeners on Spotify and quickly established herself as one of the leading voices of urban pop in Latin America. Combining reggaeton, trap, and pop, her songs are synonymous with partying and celebration, having already collaborated with J Balvin, Camila Cabello, and Iglesias, among others. "IMAN” was just released and precedes her upcoming album. She mentioned that she had never performed this song live before. The new track resulted in a sound that blends European pop culture with the unique magnetism of the singer from Quilmes. On stage, Maria Becerra is a force of nature, with dynamic choreography and vibrant interaction with the audience. Her performance is marked by contagious energy, keeping the crowd ecstatic from start to finish.

As night fell, rap was heard on the main stage with Puerto Rican rapper and singer Myke Towers. He recently performed at the Queima das Fitas in Coimbra, where he made his debut in Portugal. Known for his collaborations with big names in Latin music, such as Bad Bunny and Farruko, Towers has established himself as one of the pillars of trap and reggaeton. His lyrical skill and addictive beats make his songs a constant presence on playlists worldwide. Myke Towers’ songs are rooted in styles like reggaeton and hip-hop, making him one of the greatest representatives of urban music from Puerto Rico. The single “LALA” has been listened to over 650 million times on Spotify. He just released ‘ADIVINO’ with Bad Bunny, which is already a big hit. On stage, Myke Towers displays a confident and engaging demeanor, dominating the scene with his imposing presence and natural charisma. His performance is a parade of hits, keeping the audience jumping and singing along.

Closing the first night of the festival, Alejandro Sanz brought his iconic voice and a career full of hits to the stage in Serralves. One of the most internationally recognized Spanish artists, Sanz is known for his blend of pop, rock, and flamenco, creating a unique and captivating sound. With over 25 million albums sold and multi-platinum records, he has accumulated numerous awards and accolades, including four Grammy Awards and 22 Latin Grammy Awards. With timeless hits like "Corazón Partío" and "Amiga Mía," Sanz has garnered a loyal and international fan base. His stage presence is marked by a mix of emotion and impeccable vocal technique, providing a grand finale to the night. Alejandro Sanz sings with a passion that transcends language barriers, deeply connecting with the audience.

The 2024 edition, scheduled to take place from July 10 to 13, is set to host a plethora of world-renowned artists. Among the headliners are the legendary rock band Pearl Jam, who will return to the festival six years after their last show in Madrid. Blind Zero, one of the most iconic names in Portuguese rock, is celebrating thirty years of a career filled with success and innovation this year. A new stop in the calendar was added, and it's huge: Rock in Rio, at the freshly new Tejo Stage. 

The history of Blind Zero is inseparable from the evolution of rock in Portugal. Since their first chords in 1994, the band has been a driving force in the music scene, selling thousands of records, producing nine studio albums, and a live DVD for MTV in Milan. The quartet, led by Miguel Guedes, has become an integral part of the country's cultural fabric, with a sound that spans generations.

The 30th anniversary was celebrated with a memorable concert at Casa da Música, in the heart of Porto, where the band presented “Courage and Doom” live. This event foreshadows what fans can expect at Rock in Rio Lisbon, where Blind Zero's guitars are set to reign on the festival’s new stage.

The single “Running Back to You” offers a glimpse into the sonic universe of the new album, with dense and atmospheric soundscapes reflecting the band's characteristic turbulence and emotions. Blind Zero celebrates 30 years at Rock in Rio 2024

This edition saw another interesting lineup including James Arthur, Calum Scott, Kevin O Chris, Tom Grennan, and Calema gracing the stages at Altice Forum Braga over the past weekend. The second installment of the winter festival attracted nearly 20,000 attendees over the course of two days, solidifying its status as a major event in December's music scene.

The festival area took over both the interior and exterior of Altice Forum Braga, boasting two covered stages: the Authentica Stage and the Urban Stage. Amidst the chilly winter air and rain, attendees were treated to electrifying performances against the backdrop of the festival's ambiance.

At the Authentica staged, five performances each day were expecting, always starting with Portuguese artists.

The Xutos e Pontapés, formed in 1978, are an iconic Portuguese rock band, known for their contagious energy and lyrics that capture the rebellious spirit and urban life. With a career spanning decades, they are an undeniable reference in national music.

Unfortunately, they had to cancel their performance at the Authentica stage due to health issues of one of the members. The band announced on social media that, due to João Cabeleira's condition, it would not be possible to hold the concert at the festival. The group expressed regret for the cancellation and the inconvenience caused to fans and the event promoter.

Calum Scott first gained widespread recognition in 2015 when he auditioned for the ninth series of Britain's Got Talent. His emotional rendition of Robyn's "Dancing On My Own" earned him a standing ovation from the judges and audience, ultimately propelling him to the finals of the competition. Following his success on the show, Calum signed with Capitol Records and released his debut single "Dancing On My Own" in 2016, which quickly climbed the charts and garnered millions of views on YouTube.

Since his breakout moment, Calum Scott has continued to captivate audiences worldwide with his soulful voice and heartfelt performances. Despite a shaky start marked by a minor glitch with the auto-tune, which seemed unnecessary for an artist of his caliber, James Arthur's performance swiftly regained momentum and soared to new heights. With his undeniable talent shining through, he delivered a flawless set that left the audience spellbound. The night reached its pinnacle when special guest Fernando Daniel joined him on stage, igniting the crowd into a frenzy and culminating what many considered a triumphant conclusion to the festival.

Lon3r Johnny, a Portuguese musician initially known as "Johny BK", began his musical journey in 2012, exploring boom bap beats. After a period in London, he reemerged in Portugal as "Lon3r Johnny", blending emo with trap in his 2017 EPs. Joining ProfJam's Think Music label in 2018 propelled his career, leading to performances at renowned festivals like Meo Sudoeste. Despite leaving Think Music in 2020, Lon3r Johnny continued to evolve, releasing his second album "Vida Rockstar" in 2022, which introduced the innovative "rage rap" style to Portuguese hip-hop. His historic performance at the first Rolling Loud festival in Europe in July 2022 solidified his place in the Portuguese music scene.

His breakthrough came with the release of his debut album "Pedra Filosofal" in 2018, which showcased his lyrical prowess and storytelling abilities. Since then, Orochi has continued to make waves in the Brazilian rap scene, collaborating with other artists and releasing singles that resonate with audiences for their raw honesty and social commentary.

Orochi faced legal troubles on July 1, 2022, when he and three others were arrested by police in Rio de Janeiro for illegal drug possession. Ecstasy, hashish, and marijuana were found in the car, leading to their detention at the 78th DP in the Fonseca neighborhood of Niterói. Despite the setbacks, Orochi continued to make waves in the music industry, earning an invitation to perform at Rock in Rio on September 10, 2022. Taking the stage at the Espaço Favela, Orochi showcased his talent to a wide audience, demonstrating resilience in the face of adversity. In 2023, it was time to do the same in Braga, with the Urban Stage attracting a completely packed audience.

Venturing into the surrounding serras, visitors discover remnants of Roman mining sites, bearing witness to Valongo's pivotal role during a historical peak in mining activities. These ancient artifacts, coupled with the city's geological wonders, weave a narrative of Valongo's rich past.

Valongo not only embraces its geological and mining heritage but also celebrates its cultural and culinary legacy. The annual Toy Festival commemorates a century of Portuguese traditional toys, fostering a connection between generations. Meanwhile, the Workshop of Regueifa and Biscuit stands as a living ode to Valongo's culinary prowess, inviting visitors to savor the city's esteemed artisanal bread and biscuits while immersing themselves in the cultural heritage of the region.

This commitment to preserving heritage extends beyond Valongo's physical landmarks to its vibrant cultural scene. Demonstrating a dedication to fostering artistic expression, the municipality recently sponsored three concerts as part of the FIOMS International Festival of Organ and Sacred Music in the Greater Porto region. Attending one of these performances provided a firsthand glimpse into the synergy between Valongo's historical richness and its contemporary support for the arts.

Bringing the sounds of the British Isles to Valongo, Sara Glanzer and Sean Maxwell performed Renaissance Music for recorder and organ in the FIOMS International Festival of Organ and Sacred Music.

The Valongo audience was graced with music untypical for the Iberian Peninsula. The historic organ housed here was constructed in Huddersfield, England more than 140 years ago and is a terrific representation of the warm, reserved sound we expect from Romantic English instruments. This stark contrast to the bright, reedy “Iberian sound” gave the listeners a glimpse into a soundscape they surely won’t soon forget.

Sara, an Austrian recorder player, and Sean Maxwell, an American organist and harpsichordist, used their expertise in early music and historically informed performance practise to breathe life into the sounds of the ages past. On the menu for the evening were works composed in England between 1500 and 1650, with a special emphasis on William Byrd, whose 400th death anniversary is celebrated this year. Some soft and lyrical, some loud and fast, others brooding and dark, there was something for everyone at this very special festival performance.
