FC Porto emerged victorious in Braga, clinching third place with a late goal from Galeno. Despite early setbacks and a resolute SC Braga defense, the Dragons' persistence paid off, ensuring their spot in the Europa League and setting the stage for the upcoming Portuguese Cup final.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, the streets of Braga filled with eager fans, all anticipating the final major clash of the season. The Estádio Municipal de Braga, also known as "Pedreira," was enveloped in an atmosphere of euphoria. Over 23,000 people formed an impressive crowd, gathering to witness the decisive match between SC Braga and FC Porto, with the third place in the Liga Portugal Betclic 2023/24 and direct access to the Europa League at stake.
The night promised excitement not only for the on-field battle but also for the celebrations off the pitch. During the halftime interval, the young U19 national champions of SC Braga were celebrated, receiving a warm ovation from the packed stadium. It was a deserved moment of recognition after clinching the title, filling the fans with pride and hope for the future of the club.
First Half: Red Card and Tension
The match began with intensity, both teams determined to secure victory. However, SC Braga's vision became clouded early on. Before the first quarter of an hour had passed, Víctor Gómez committed two fouls, earning two yellow cards and a subsequent expulsion. Down to ten men, SC Braga was forced to readjust their strategy. The introduction of Vítor Carvalho in place of Pizzi brought a new defensive dynamic, but emotional instability was evident.
FC Porto sought to capitalize on their numerical advantage, constantly pressuring Matheus' goal. Yet, the Braga defense, showing immense spirit, managed to keep their net secure. The minutes following the expulsion represented a golden opportunity for the Dragons, one they failed to seize. The first half ended with few goal-scoring chances and a penalty appeal by Ricardo Horta, which referee Nuno Almeida dismissed.
Second Half: Dominance and Decision
The second half saw a much more determined and incisive FC Porto. Within the opening minutes, Otávio Ataíde struck the woodwork, followed by impressive saves from Matheus against shots from Pepê, Francisco Conceição, and Galeno. The Porto pressure mounted, but the Braga defense held firm. A notable breakaway by Cristián Borja, almost resulting in a goal for Ricardo Horta, electrified the crowd, but Wendell's timely intervention prevented disaster for the Dragons.
As the match seemed destined for a draw, with both teams exhausting their efforts in search of a decisive goal, Galeno showcased his talent in the 84th minute. In a swift counterattack, set up by Taremi, the Brazilian fired a cross-shot into Braga's net, sealing the final score. FC Porto secured third place in the league with 72 points, four more than their opponents.
