The city of Porto is set to welcome one of Europe’s most anticipated classic car gatherings this Saturday: The Passeio dos Ingleses. Now in its 21st edition, this grand parade of vintage automobiles is organized by the Automóvel Club de Portugal, featuring 204 British-made classics on display. Commanding attention among the distinguished participants is Commander James Capps, of the United Kingdom’s Royal Navy, who will drive a Bentley.

Acclaimed for its historical, cultural, and sentimental value, the Passeio dos Ingleses celebrates over two decades of motoring passion, paying tribute to marques like Bentley, Aston Martin, Rolls Royce, MG, and others. Enthusiasts and onlookers alike can marvel at these rolling pieces of history as participants depart from both Lisbon and Porto and bring a touch of old-world glamour to the roads of the Oeste region and Minho.

In Porto, the National Museum Soares dos Reis will host the starting lineup from 9 a.m., with the official launch at 10 a.m. Cars will journey onward to Pousada de Santa Maria do Bouro in Amares, pausing first at the Monastery of Santo André de Rendufe. Whether you’re a car buff or simply seeking a nostalgic day out, this event offers an unforgettable showcase of enduring British engineering and elegance.

A total of 204 vintage automobiles set forth this Saturday from both Lisbon and Porto to celebrate over two decades of legendary motoring history. Among those behind the wheel is Commander James Capps, who will proudly drive a Bentley and showcase the spirit of British engineering.

The 20th edition of the Porto Marathon takes place tomorrow, November 20, welcoming over 12,000 participants from across the globe. The event, which combines sport, scenic views, and community spirit, includes three races suited for different skill levels: a full marathon (42 km), a 10-kilometer race, and a 6-kilometer fun run for families and casual runners.

The race begins at 9:00 AM and showcases some of Porto’s most iconic landmarks, including the Douro River, Ribeira district, and Atlantic coastline, offering runners and spectators an unforgettable experience.


To ensure the event runs smoothly, significant traffic restrictions will be in place. Around 150 streets in Porto and Matosinhos will face closures or limited access, particularly along the route between Castelo do Queijo and the Freixo Bridge.

Complete closures will occur on streets such as Avenida Montevideu, Passeio Alegre, and Alfândega between 3:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Key arteries like Avenida da Boavista, Rua da Vilarinha, and Rua Mouzinho da Silveira will experience disruptions between 6:30 AM and 11:30 AM.

In Matosinhos, around 30 streets, including Brito Capelo, Avenida Serpa Pinto, and the mobile bridge to Leça da Palmeira, will have traffic restrictions between 6:30 AM and 11:00 AM. Parking bans will also apply to areas like Rua do Ouro and Avenida da Boavista from midnight to 4:00 PM.


Several bus stops managed by STCP and intercity operators will be temporarily deactivated during the event. Travelers are advised to plan ahead.


While these adjustments may cause temporary inconvenience, the Porto Marathon offers a unique opportunity to witness an event that celebrates perseverance and community spirit, set against the stunning backdrop of one of Portugal’s most beautiful cities.

The show will be open to the public from October 11th to 13th, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tickets are priced at €10 each, with no exchanges or refunds permitted.

This summer, the city of Porto will kick off the third edition of its Summer opPORTOnities program, designed to provide young residents and students with hands-on professional experience. Aimed at those aged 18 to 21, this initiative offers 60 paid internships in local companies during July and August.

Despite claiming victory with 29.5% of the votes and securing 79 seats—just two more than the PS, with four seats still to be allocated from overseas constituencies—the coalition led by Luís Montenegro experienced one of the poorest performances in the history of PSD and CDS collaborations. Luís Montenegro, the PSD leader, expressed a "well-founded expectation" that the President of the Republic would appoint him as the prime minister to form the government, emphasizing the apparent inevitability of AD's victory and PS's defeat.

"It is my well-founded expectation that after consulting all political forces, the President of the Republic will nominate me to form a government," Montenegro stated during his press briefing at a Lisbon hotel where the AD coalition gathered on election night.

Regarding his campaign pledge not to collaborate with Chega, Montenegro reiterated his commitment to uphold this stance.

"The PS received significantly fewer votes and seats. It is my expectation that we all rise to the occasion to serve the national interest and the interests of the Portuguese people. What is required of the PS is to respect the will of the Portuguese people. My expectation is that neither PS nor Chega form a negative majority to obstruct the AD government," Montenegro highlighted.

"The Portuguese have expressed their desire for a change in government and policies, and for major parties to showcase renewed leadership and foster more dialogue among leaders and parties," he added.

The Democratic Alliance (AD), a coalition consisting of the PSD, CDS-PP, and PPM, narrowly won the early elections on Sunday, which also saw significant gains for Chega and Livre, with the Socialist Party (PS) emerging as the main loser.

Mafalda Velho from Alfena shared how the theme of digital dependency inspired the young members of the Jesus Christ Youth Group to reduce their cellphone use during the Journey, underscoring the importance of genuine human connection.

World Youth Day with Pope Francis Comes to Lisbon 2023

In the latest edition of the QS World University Rankings (QSUR) 2024, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) maintains its position at the top for the 12th consecutive year. The University of Porto, representing Portugal, has significantly improved its standing by climbing 21 places to secure the 253rd position among 2,963 evaluated institutions based on nine indicators.


The top spots in the rankings are dominated by American and British universities, with Cambridge and Oxford following closely behind MIT. Harvard, Stanford, Imperial College London, and ETH Zurich also feature in the top 10, along with the University of California, Berkeley, the National University of Singapore, and UCL in the United Kingdom.


In Portugal, after the University of Porto, other leading institutions include the universities of Aveiro (344th), Coimbra (351st), Nova Lisbon (400th), Minho (611-620th), ISCTE (751-760th), and the Portuguese Catholic University (901-950th). Notably, the University of São Paulo secures the highest position among Portuguese-speaking countries, ranking 85th overall and standing as the top institution in Latin America.


The QSUR 2024 incorporates new evaluation criteria, including sustainability and international research collaboration. Universities are now assessed for their efforts to reduce environmental impact, their network of international research partnerships, and their reputation among employers. This year's rankings witnessed the most significant methodological changes since the inception of the QSUR in 2004. As rankings gain increasing prominence, universities are adapting and striving to meet the evaluated metrics. Africa saw significant improvements for 75% of its universities, while the Middle East region showcased increased competitiveness. Additionally, Australia achieved the milestone of having three universities ranked within the top 20 for the first time.

MIT continues to top the QS World University Rankings 2024, with the University of Porto emerging as the highest-ranked Portuguese institution.

The Porto City Council joined Porto Pride and together they raised the colors of the rainbow, an LGBTI symbol, in Praça do General Humberto Delgado.

Underlining the “great symbology” of the moment, the mayor of Porto believes that issues related to the LGBTI community are, essentially, “a matter of tolerance".

In an interview with Porto Canal after the raising of the rainbow flag, Rui Moreira reinforced how it is “very important that institutions – and the chamber in particular – associate themselves”. “It is a subject that has to do with human rights, with freedoms, and also with the way in which the city is a city open to all”, considers the mayor of Porto.

On the part of the organization of the initiative, Diogo Vieira da Silva praised the association of the municipality and also referred that the presence of the various political forces at the moment is proof of an “open and sincere dialogue on how we can make a city for everyone and from everyone ”.

“We are demonstrating that gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, intersex people, not only those who visit the city, but those who live in Porto, are welcome and are part of the city”, he believes.

The request that reached the Porto Chamber, from Porto Pride, the organization of the LGBT+ Music Festival, Associação Plano i and VARIAÇÕES – LGBTI+ Commerce and Tourism Association of Portugal, said Rui Moreira at an Executive meeting, “was if we we authorized the erection of a mast. We said that not only would we authorize it, but we would also put up the mast”.

And so, on this International Day for the Fight against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, Porto wears the colors of the rainbow, contributing to raise awareness about violence, discrimination and repression of LGBTI+ communities around the world.

Thousands of Academy students walked down Rua de Camões, in a parade that ended in front of the City Hall, with the usual sticks on top hats.

The procession of 43 cars brings together around 400,000 people annually, including students and visitors. University students from all higher education institutions in Porto parade around the city with the colors of their courses and floats.

Queima das Fitas started this Sunday with some setbacks: it was marked by long queues and problems in exchanging the ticket for the wristband that would be used to buy drinks and food at Queimódromo. Faced with complaints from students who stayed outside the enclosure, the Associação Académica do Porto announced a hybrid payment system.

On February 22, 2022, the first stone was laid on Padre Diamantino Gomes Street in the Ramalde parish of Porto for what will be the future home of professional football. After about a year and two months, the president of the Portuguese League and the Executive Board visited the site to observe the progress of the work.

"This building is absolutely iconic and will bring something unique to this city. It will be very fan-oriented and a work that breathes football, with a unique football dimension," began Pedro Proença, highlighting that it is an "ecologically innovative building equipped with cutting-edge technology." In summary, "it will be an iconic work for the city of Porto."

When asked about the first time he envisioned this project, the president of the Portuguese League went back in time. "Four years ago, we realized the insufficiency of the current space of the Portuguese League, and given the entire solidification process, there was a need for a larger headquarters. Either we could put more dimension in the current one, or we would embark on a much more ambitious project," said Pedro Proença.

"At the time, there was a brainstorming discussion, and I remember thinking that we really had to make this happen. I mentioned that I had a new name for the building, it would be called Arena Liga Portugal. And that's where we started on the path that is now well underway, in an infrastructure that will qualify the League with a set of previously unthinkable features," he added.
